Davos 2024: Ukraine’s Resilience Takes Center Stage Amid Global Diplomacy

Every year, Davos, a tranquil Swiss ski resort, becomes the epicentre of global dialogue and decision-making as it hosts the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting.

The 2024 meeting, taking place from January 15 to January 19, is set against the backdrop of unprecedented global challenges, prompting leaders from over 100 governments, major international organisations, and 1,000 partner companies to convene and strategise on critical issues.

The overarching theme of Davos 2024 is the imperative task of rebuilding trust in the face of rapid transformation and uncertainty. Against the backdrop of a fractured world, the meeting will delve into four key pillars: achieving security and cooperation, fostering growth and jobs, harnessing artificial intelligence for economic and societal progress, and crafting a long-term strategy for climate, nature, and energy.

The significance of this year’s meeting is underscored by the presence of more than 60 heads of state and government, including figures like Antony Blinken, António Guterres, Emmanuel Macron, Jens Stoltenberg, and Ursula von der Leyen. These global leaders will engage in discussions ranging from reforming multilateral approaches to leveraging artificial intelligence for societal benefit.

Davos is not merely about keynote speeches; it is renowned for the networking and social interactions that unfold in its corridors, side rooms, and restaurants. With approximately 2,500 delegates and numerous others in attendance, it stands as one of the largest gatherings of global decision-makers throughout the year.

Since the adoption of the WEF’s 2020 manifesto, which guides companies in the age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, a commitment to paying fair taxes, zero tolerance for corruption, upholding human rights, and advocating for a level playing field has become a guiding principle for corporate leaders.

Amidst the grandeur of Davos, one event stands out – Ukraine House Davos. The annual gathering serves as a platform to spotlight Ukraine’s indomitable spirit and address the ongoing challenges posed by Russia’s prolonged invasion. Ulyana Khromyak, Executive Director of Ukraine House Davos, expressed that the event aims to bring together business leaders, policymakers, journalists, and thought leaders committed to Ukraine’s victory and its post-war future.

This year marks nearly two years of Ukraine’s defence of its territorial integrity, sovereignty, and European future. “691 Days Deciding Your Tomorrow,” a project organised by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation and PinchukArtCentre, offers an immersive experience showcasing Ukrainians defending their freedom amid constant threat. The resilience of the Ukrainian people is central to discussions at Ukraine House Davos.

National security advisers from 83 countries gathered in Davos to discuss Ukraine’s 10-point peace plan, seeking an end to the war with Russia. Notably, representatives from emerging economies like Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa, part of the BRICS alliance, attended the talks. The absence of China raised concerns, emphasising the need for collective efforts to influence nations like China and Russia.

President Zelenskyy’s special address at Davos, scheduled for January 16, underscores the ongoing importance of the forum. Zelenskyy is expected to discuss achieving security and cooperation in a fractured world, emphasising Ukraine’s position and opportunities on the global stage.

The Davos Week also hosts discussions on preventing wars through advanced technologies, featuring prominent speakers like Karl Lillrud, Andrey Kolodyuk, Jennifer Nadel, Combiz Abdolrahimi, Luca Bertoletti, and Nina Kulchevich Lakhno. The focus includes AI technologies, cybersecurity innovations, threat recognition, and the role of business in preserving lives in conflict zones.

Investors attending Davos are invited to participate in exclusive discussions on geo-political investment risks. The panel on Geo-Political Investment Risks explores private hedge funds’ investments in conflict-afflicted nations, addressing ethical concerns and geopolitical dynamics.

As Davos 2024 unfolds, it serves as a critical juncture for global leaders to collaborate, address pressing issues, and pave the way for a more secure, cooperative, and sustainable future. The world watches as decisions made in the Swiss town resonate across nations, influencing the trajectory of global governance and cooperation.
